Can Cosmetic Surgery Improve Workplace Marketability?

business woman with plastic surgeryIn recent months, I have seen a growing number of patients who are concerned about their appearance because of how their image may impact their careers. It turns out they are not alone.

News of layoffs and economic challenges abound. There is also a long held belief that one’s appearance has a direct impact on hiring. So perhaps it is not surprising that millions of American women and men are considering cosmetic procedures to help give them a competitive edge in the workforce.

In fact, a telephone survey compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) of women between the ages of 18 and 64, found that many women believe cosmetic plastic surgery procedures are an important rung when climbing the ladder of success in their chosen field of work.

Women and men who are approaching or have reached middle age find themselves taking steps to retain or regain a younger appearance. They believe such changes can positively impact their ability to land a new job or retain a current one.

Here are some other results of the phone survey by ASPS that I found very interesting:

  • 13 percent (more than 1 out of 10 of the 115-million working-age women) say they would consider having a cosmetic medical procedure specifically to make them more confident and more competitive in the job market.
  • An astounding 3 percent (nearly 3.5-million working women) say they've already had a cosmetic procedure to increase their perceived value in the workplace.
  • 73 percent (almost three out of four or, 84-million working women) believe, particularly in these challenging economic times, appearance and youthful looks play a part in getting hired, getting a promotion, or getting new clients.
  • 80 percent (four out of five or 92-million working women) think having cosmetic medical procedures can boost a person's confidence.

Many women believe cosmetic plastic surgery procedures are an important rung when climbing the ladder of success in their chosen field of work. What procedures are the most sought after among those hoping to retain a competitive edge at work? In my practice, I have found that many women and men initially turn to non-surgical procedures for a quick boost to both their appearance and confidence levels

The most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures for working adults include:

The most popular surgical cosmetic procedures among working adults in my practice tend to be:

Many patients find that these non-surgical and surgical cosmetic plastic surgery procedures give them a more youthful, refreshed, healthy appearance; and ultimately, it seems when they look better, they feel better about themselves both on the job and outside of the workplace too.
