Breastfeeding after Augmentation: It’s Safe
Here’s a question we get asked a lot.
Is it safe to breast feed after breast augmentation?
For many women, the answer is a resounding yes!
Last year, about 300,000 women had breast augmentation, many with silicone implants. Here’s the re-assuring news: An Institute of Medicine committee determined that breast-feeding infants are not at risk of ingesting silicone. Even if the implants were to rupture, the committee advised the molecules are too large to pass into the milk ducts and breast gland tissue.
That said, it is important to note that women who have undergone any form of breast surgery may experience difficulty breastfeeding or suffer a decrease in overall milk production. Incision and implant placement do may make a difference. Often, placing implants below the pectoral muscles is least likely to disturb the milk ducts.
